Superman Was Drawn By a Canadian (Nobody Tells You This)

Superman is often called the most American superhero ever created, but the artist who drew him wasn’t American at all. Joe Shuster was born in Toronto in 1914, and after his family moved to Cleveland, he met writer Jerry Siegel and the two of them co-created Superman, who debuted in Action Comics #1 in 1938. Shuster later said the Metropolis skyline was shaped by his childhood memories of the Toronto skyline, not Cleveland’s.

This is part of “Wait, That’s Canadian?”, a series digging up the surprising Canadian history hiding behind everyday American icons, inventions, and pop culture. If you didn’t know the Superman origin story had a Toronto connection, you’re not alone. New episodes drop regularly.
